The naming study is one kind of Chinese Astrology (Horoscope). Chinese people always attach
great importance to the choice of names. As the old saying goes, under the right
name, then it can be within your jurisdiction. The naming studying has thousands
years history and is still a quite important subject nowadays.
To Chinese, the name's functions are far more than just a code for every
specific person; they contain the invisible fate and the visible and meaning
characters. Fate is something intangible and negative, it coincides with 'the
hidden material,' with concrete form and meaning, and names are belonging to the
positive symbol of characters. Therefore, a good name can promote and improve
one's destiny.
In China, when parents name a new born baby, they may take several factors into
full consideration: the astrological principles, the birth date, the array of
five elements (metal, wood, water, fire, and earth) told by the fortune-teller,
the form, pronunciation, and meaning of name. Although, some people will
challenge that it is just another ancient superstition, it is supported by
social scientific studies. For example, from psychology, if a person whose name
comes with a meaning of ¨hard workingˇ¨(Qin, it is quite a common word you can
find in Chinese name). When the person is called by others, he is reminded to be
hard working and internalized as his basic attitude in doing his studying or job
then he may get more successes.
In modern China, the naming no only apply to human being but also apply to
enterprise. Chinese believe an enterprise has similar life cycle as a person. It
born, grow and die. Therefore, its destiny is also affected by it
BaZi
and name. To human being the BaZi
is congenital, however to an enterprise; it is determined by the owner. So the
owner will consult a fortune teller for good timing to start(born) the
enterprise. Also the good name is consistent with the
BaZi
of the enterprise can synergy its destiny. Some people, when they have a hard
time in their life, they will look into whether their names are inconsistent
with their BaZi,
if so they can alter their name by asking opinion of a fortune teller(Fenf Shui
Master). They may find the new name can bring them auspicious, abundant good
intention, self-confidence and working diligently. Besides, the Feng Shui
principles, I believe that the new name can bring new ideas, mission and vision
to a person. So he look his problems in another new direction, finding out
innovative solutions and solve those problem, then improve his destiny. It is
derived from positive attitudes in problem solving. The Feng Shui Master just
help his consulter to find out these positive attitudes.
To most Western, when they are being given a name, very few of the parents will
consider the names whether are consistent to their
BaZi
or not. Nowadays, more and more Western will translate their name to Chinese.
However, the translations are base on pronunciation, sometimes, the meanings
associate with Chinese word is quite funny, unlucky or meaningless. A good
Chinese name should consistent with the owner's
BaZi
and improve/promote the owner's destiny.
